A long term relationship "LTR" is typically when a man and woman pledge exclusivity to one another. They key here is that the two people involved have good chemistry and a strong connection with each other, so much so that they don't wish to see other people while they are together. The relationship will be a sexual one, and will involve more responsibility than that of a casual sexual relationship, such as being Fuck Buddies.

In a long term relationship, both the man and woman are expected at some stage to meet their partner's friends and family, which differs from a casual relationship. There will also be more regular contact and the couple are expected to do more things together outside of the bedroom. There should also be no game playing or 'pick-up' techniques being used at this stage.

Example

After six weeks of dating, you say: "I enjoy spending time with you and I'm not seeing anyone else. How would you feel about being exclusive?" She can say yes, say "not yet", or say no. All three are fine answers; you now know where you stand.

How a casual connection becomes an LTR

  • Look for the signs: regular contact, time spent together outside the bedroom, meeting friends and family.
  • Have the exclusivity talk openly. Hints and assumptions cause most misunderstandings.
  • Check the basics: what each of you wants, how much time you can give and where you each see this going.
  • Keep your own friends and interests. A relationship works best between two people with full lives.

Common mistakes

Rushing the label, assuming exclusivity without asking, or hiding what you want are the usual ones. If she says she does not want a relationship, believe her; see She doesn't want a relationship. A relationship that began as a fuck buddy arrangement or a one night stand can work if both of you really want it, but only if you both say so. More in When does a relationship begin?
