The Mystery Method is a pickup system created by the Canadian Erik von Markovik, who goes by the name Mystery. It is also called M3. It became widely known through Neil Strauss’s book “The Game” (2005), in which Mystery is the central teacher, and through Mystery’s own book “The Mystery Method: How to Get Beautiful Women into Bed” (2006, with Chris Odom). He also presented the VH1 show “The Pickup Artist” (2007). For his story, see Mystery (Erik von Markovik).

How it works

M3 breaks an encounter into three stages, each with smaller phases:

  1. Attraction. Start the conversation, show that you have value and make her curious. The tools here include openers, social proof, demonstrating higher value and peacocking.
  2. Comfort. Build trust and rapport, usually over a longer conversation or several meetings. Real curiosity and shared stories matter more than lines.
  3. Seduction. Move toward physical closeness and intimacy, ideally gradually. See kino escalation and last minute resistance.

Sources describe the smaller phases and their labels differently, so the three-stage order is the safe summary. A famous opening idea in the system is approaching a group and winning the acceptance of the whole set, not only the woman you like. Several openers on this site carry his name, for example the Frisbee Opener, the Bookstore Opener and the Picture Opener.

Why it matters

The Mystery Method turned a loose forum culture into a teachable process with named steps and bootcamps, and several later coaching companies trace back to it. Mystery’s first company later became Love Systems. See Nick Savoy and, for a rival school that grew out of the same scene, Real Social Dynamics.

Criticism

The method is widely criticised for presenting dating as a set of tactics that treat women as targets, and for relying on manipulative techniques such as negging. Today it is best read as a historical system: the useful parts are approaching, building comfort and being honest about what you want, and the rest is better left alone.
