Rizz is slang for charisma, specifically the ability to charm someone and flirt successfully. Someone with “rizz” is confident, easy to talk to and good at making another person feel interested. It is usually understood as a short form of “charisma”, and Oxford University Press picked it as its word of the year for 2023.

“Rizz up” means to flirt with someone, and “no rizz” describes a person who struggles to. Slang like this changes quickly, but the core meaning has stayed the same.

What rizz looks like

  • Relaxed body language and steady eye contact.
  • Playful humour, such as the cocky and funny banter pickup coaches have taught for years.
  • Real curiosity about the other person, not a rehearsed script.
  • No visible neediness and no panic when it goes badly.

It’s the same attraction that pickup coaches described long before the word existed. What changed is the vocabulary.

Example

Her: I almost didn’t come out tonight.

You: Then I’m glad your plans fell through. Now you owe me a good story.

Light, warm, and a little bold, without pressure.

How to build it

  • Practise. Rizz isn’t an inborn talent. Most of it comes from talking to many people and getting past approach anxiety.
  • Be curious. Ask follow-up questions, and remember what she says.
  • Develop your own style. Borrowed lines sound borrowed. Use openers as a starting point, then put them in your own words.
  • Respect the response. Real rizz includes noticing when someone isn’t interested and letting it go gracefully.

On dating apps, the same idea applies to your messages. Our Tinder pick-up lines and Tinder openers show what a good first message looks like.
