Push-Pull

Definition

Push-pull: switching between warmth and playful distance, so that interest does not flatten out. Done clumsily it reads as mixed signals and games.

Push-pull means alternating between closeness and playful distance in a conversation: a compliment or warm moment (the “pull”), followed by a light tease or a step back (the “push”). The idea is that steady, predictable praise becomes dull, while a mix of warmth and challenge keeps the other person curious.

How it works

Think of two lines: “You’re great at this” and “but I’m not sure I’d trust you with my playlist.” The first draws her in, the second adds a little tension and humour. Together they feel like banter rather than flattery. The same idea sits behind cocky & funny: confidence plus warmth, never one alone.

It also fits the way interest tends to work in a conversation (watch for indicators of interest): if you are always agreeable, you are easy to forget; if you are always teasing, you are tiring. The skill is in the balance, and in watching how she reacts.

Example

She says she has just run her first 10k. You: “That’s actually impressive. I would have taken the bus. Was it fun, or are you a bit crazy?” She laughs and tells you more. You praised her and joked in the same breath.

When it backfires

Push-pull is easy to misuse. If the pushes are really put-downs, it turns into negging, and if you disappear for days after being warm, it is simply mixed signals. Many people find on-off behaviour stressful, not exciting, and it is a poor foundation for a real relationship.

A respectful version:

  • Keep the “push” obviously playful and about something harmless.
  • Always follow it with real interest in what she says.
  • Stop at once if she looks hurt or confused.
  • Be consistent when it matters: if you say you will call, call.

Real attraction does not need games. Push-pull is just one way to keep a conversation lively and honest at the same time.
