Alpha Male

“Alpha male” is a popular label for a man who seems confident, dominant and high in status, the one others follow and women notice. In the pickup community it is used both as a goal (“be more alpha”) and as a rival: see AMOG, the Alpha Male Other Guy. The opposite label is the beta male.

Where the term comes from

The word was borrowed from animal research. Early studies of captive wolves described a fixed ladder of rank with an “alpha” on top, and the biologist L. David Mech helped spread the idea in his 1970 book “The Wolf”. Later, after years of watching wild wolves, Mech concluded that a pack is usually a family: the so-called alpha pair are simply the parents. Many biologists have since dropped the term for wild wolves. Whether it describes human men is therefore a metaphor, not a scientific fact.

What people mean by it

In dating advice, “alpha” usually bundles qualities such as:

• Confidence. Comfortable in his own skin, not seeking approval. See abundance mentality.
• Leadership. Makes plans, suggests the next step and handles problems calmly.
• Social ease. Relaxed with strangers and in a group, with good social proof.
• Direct communication. Says what he wants without games. See direct game.

Criticism and a better reading

The word is often misused to excuse arrogance, aggression or disrespect, and that is not what attracts most people over time. Dominance can get attention; kindness, humour and reliability keep it. Being “alpha” also makes a poor identity: a man who needs to look dominant at all times is acting from insecurity, which is the opposite of the calm the term is meant to describe.
