Qualification

Qualification means inviting the other person to show why she is a good match for you, instead of only proving yourself to her. In pickup language you “qualify” a woman when you ask her what she values or what she is like and react with real interest to the answer. The aim is to turn a one-sided pitch into a conversation between equals.

How it works

Many nervous men talk about themselves and wait for approval. Qualification flips that: you show that you have standards and that you are curious about her. A man who is clearly happy to leave if there is no fit comes across as relaxed, and the woman gets a chance to be more than someone being impressed. The idea also helps with neediness and the scarcity mentality: you are not chasing, you are finding out whether you like each other.

Example

You: “You seem adventurous. What’s the most spontaneous thing you’ve done this year?” Her: “I booked a flight to Lisbon on a Tuesday.” You: “Nice. That’s the kind of person I like to spend time with. What made you go?”

You asked something that lets her show a quality you value, you reacted honestly and you kept the conversation going. Compare this with a compliment-only opener, which keeps her in the receiving seat.

Common mistakes

• Turning it into an interview. One question after another feels like an exam. Share something about yourself in between.
• Judging. Qualification is curiosity, not a test she must pass. If it feels like a test, she will notice and leave.
• Fake standards. Pretending to be picky when you are not looks like a game. Ask about things you really care about.
• Missing the point. It works only when your interest is real. Otherwise it reads like a script.
