Zombieing is when a person who vanished from your life suddenly comes back to life. After weeks or months of silence, usually following ghosting, they send a friendly message such as “Hey, how have you been?” and act as if nothing had happened.

It differs from orbiting, where the person keeps watching you without writing. A zombie breaks the silence and asks for a reply.

Signs

  • A message out of the blue after a long break, often late in the evening or around holidays.
  • No mention of the silence, or only a vague “sorry I’ve been so busy”.
  • Casual small talk that quickly leads to “we should meet up”.
  • The old pattern returns if you answer: warm for a few days, then quiet again.

People do have reasons to return. Life gets busy, someone may regret how they acted, or they simply feel guilty. A single message does not prove bad intent. What matters is how they handle the earlier silence.

Example

Him: Hey stranger! It’s been a while. How are you?

You: Hi. You went silent after our third date, so I’m a bit surprised.

Him: Sorry, a lot was going on. Would love to make it up to you.

How to react

  • Decide what you want first. Are you still interested, or has the moment passed? Both answers are fine.
  • Take your time. There’s no rule to answer within minutes, or at all.
  • Say it once. If you are open, mention the silence and ask what changed. If you’re not, a polite “I’ve moved on, take care” closes it.
  • Judge by follow-through. An apology plus a concrete plan is worth more than a charming message.
  • Don’t feel guilty about ignoring it. Silence from someone who left you in silence is a legitimate answer.

Being dropped and then contacted again can be confusing, and being left hanging by a flake says little about your value. If you’re working through old feelings, how to get over someone can help.
