Orbiting is when a person stops communicating with you, often after ghosting, but keeps showing up on your social media. They view every story, like a photo from time to time and maybe follow you on a second platform. They stay close without ever starting a conversation, like a satellite circling a planet.

Signs

  • A name that appears first in your story views, although there has been no message in weeks.
  • Occasional likes on your posts without any comment.
  • New follow requests from the same person on other apps.
  • No reply when you write, yet the activity continues.

Keep in mind that social media is public. A like or a story view can be curiosity, habit or nothing at all. Orbiting is a pattern, not a single view.

Example

You: Hey, haven’t heard from you in a while. How are you?

(no reply, but a story view and a heart on your latest photo the next day)

How to react

  • Don’t over-interpret it. The other person watching you tells you nothing about what they feel or want.
  • Ask directly, once. If you really want to know, send one honest message. If there is still no answer, you have your answer.
  • Protect your attention. Mute or restrict the account, or remove the follower. This is not a hostile act, only a way of keeping your feed calm.
  • Don’t answer with games. Posting for an audience of one rarely makes you feel better.

Orbiting is often followed by zombieing, when the person finally messages you again, and it overlaps with breadcrumbing when small signals replace real contact.

How to avoid doing it

If you can’t give someone your time any more, but also don’t want to keep lurking, give the person room: unfollow, mute their profile or take a break from the app. For the harder part, getting over someone, see how to get over someone.
