A situationship is something between friends and a relationship. You see each other regularly, maybe sleep together, text every day and act like a couple in some ways, but nobody has said what it is or where it is going.

It differs from a fuck buddy arrangement, which is openly casual and physical. In a situationship there are real feelings or real closeness, but no clear agreement. It also differs from a long term relationship, where both people have chosen each other.

Signs

  • You can’t answer “what are we?” without hesitating.
  • Plans are made short notice, and the future (holidays, family, next month) rarely comes up.
  • You are not introduced to friends or family, or only as “a friend”.
  • One of you wants more and is afraid to ask.
  • Neither of you is seeing other people, but neither of you has promised anything either.

Example

You: I really like spending time with you. Where do you see this going?

Her: I like it too, I just don’t want to put a label on it right now.

That answer isn’t automatically a no, but it tells you the other person isn’t ready to commit. Believe what you hear.

How to react

  • Know what you want. Some people enjoy the freedom, others only stay hoping it will become more. Be honest with yourself.
  • Have one direct conversation. Say what you want and ask what the other person wants, without pressure or an ultimatum.
  • Take the answer seriously. If it doesn’t match your wish, decide on that basis, not on what might change.
  • Don’t wait indefinitely. A situationship that suits only one side tends to turn into neediness on that side.

A situationship can also end in a proper relationship, or in a friend zone situation. Both sides can make it work, if they agree about what it is. For the stages in between, see when does a relationship begin and talking stage.
