Do I look gay?

Opinion Opener · Ask the group for a quick opinion on a made-up dilemma.

Preferably used with a wing and with a game-show host/party host attitude.

"I need your honest opinion on something... do I look gay?"

Some chicks will bust out laughing when you ask this.

"...Because something really funny just happened, this dude was hitting on me in another bar!"

Better to use this with a wing and change it to "Does MYFRIEND look gay?" because it eliminates the self-conscious aspect. The person who was supposedly hit on must play it off as something totally funny and even flattering.

When to use it

Use it with a friend in a bar or at a party, with a group of women who are enjoying themselves and who have already noticed you. Jokes about sexuality can backfire. If anyone in the group looks uncomfortable, or your tone sounds like a jab at gay men, stop. Keep the joke on yourself, and tell the story about the guy who hit on you in a friendly way, without mocking him. It is meant for playful adults in a good mood.

Follow-up

Whatever the group says, enjoy it: "So what's the verdict? Is it the shirt?" Then ask the group: "Who has the best story about getting hit on in a bar?" This moves everybody into telling stories and away from the joke. Introduce yourself and your friend.

Why it works

Asking for an honest opinion is easy to answer, and a joke at your own expense makes you look relaxed. The story invites them to swap stories of their own, which builds more rapport than a few quick answers. See also wing for how to work with a friend.
