Jude Law plays Alfie, a charming British limousine driver in Manhattan who sleeps with one woman after another and avoids anything serious. The film is a remake of the 1966 classic with Michael Caine. Alfie talks straight into the camera and shares his rules for women with the audience.

The charmer

Alfie is the classic player: well dressed, quick with a compliment, always in the moment and never needy. He knows how to make every woman feel special for one evening. His affairs with characters played by Sienna Miller, Marisa Tomei and Susan Sarandon show how far charm alone can take a man.

The price

Over the course of the film Alfie’s rules stop working. The people he hurt move on, and he realises that his freedom has left him alone.

What you can learn

  • Charm is a skill. Compliments, humour and attention open doors quickly.
  • Speaking to the camera shows a man who constantly justifies himself, and that is a warning sign.
  • Players run out of time. Short-term success without connection leaves nothing behind.

Verdict

A stylish, bittersweet look at the life of a womanizer. Entertaining and more honest than it first seems.
